Metal forming was one of the first commercial applications of HEPP technology and was used by the Automobile Industry in the 1960's. Metal was literally shaped into complex forms using strong electromagnetic fields that were generated inside tube steel, which was retained in a formed mold.
The general principle behind HEPP technology is the creation of beneficial effects when discharging high electric energy densities into the immediate surrounding environment. This literal electron "avalanche" causes severe electromagnetic effects, or if discharged between a spark-gap, a plasma channel is created with temperatures reaching 25,000 K (3-X the surface of the sun) and a surface pressure of some 107 atmospheres. When discharged under water, the plasma channel induces significant shockwave and cavitation effects, as well as produces hard ultra-violet radiation over the complete UV-spectrum and into the soft x-ray realm. The microsecond megawatt pulse creates such a focused pressure wave that it induces an almost glass type mirror reflector at the shockwave front.
Pulse Power applications are unique in that high energy density discharges can be repeated on a rapid basis with multiple "shots" being delivered every second. Electicity costs remain low however, due to the pulses lasting only microseconds in duration.
